Brad Goestch, PGA (the instruction coordinator for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln PGA Golf Management Program) recently hosted a webinar on advanced golf statistics for members of Nebraska Junior Golf. In the webinar, he outlined the basics of the Strokes Gained Statistic as developed by Mark Broadie of the Columbia Business School.
The essence of the message is that traditional golf stats just don’t provide a great deal of actionable information. Strokes gained is a system of statistics that gives a value, in strokes, to each and every shot that a player plays on a golf course. With this information in hand, a player can make informed decisions and assessments on the quality of their play.
